Okiya Omtatah rose to fame as a litigator before throwing his hat in politics.
He was elected as a senator for Busia county, but he did not allow the trappings of power to get to his head. The politician said he did not upgrade his official car to go home. While most of his colleagues went for Toyota Land Cruiser, Omtatah kept his Mazda Demio.
Demio’s low fuel consumption makes it a favorite among online taxi drivers. Average economy is 5.8 litres/100km. Some Demios turn off the engine instead of idling when the car is stopped – the i-stop system helps reduce emissions. The 2016 model costs around 1 million, while the 2012 model costs around KSh 500,000
Another car belonging to the senator came forward unintentionally after having an accident while on their way to Busia. The senator said the oil truck lost control and hit his car before landing in a ditch. However, Omtatah’s car was the center of attention.
The senator was driving a Nissan Wingroad at the time of the accident. The car, which is also known as Nissan AD, is one of the cheapest in the Kenyan market and is available at a price of less than KSh 600,000. The Wingroad has two engines, a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder petrol and a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder petrol, producing 105 and 126 horsepower respectively. The larger engine returns a fuel economy of up to 14 kmpl, while the smaller engine is rated at 17.2 kmpl.
The 2014 model costs up to 600,000, while the 2017 model goes up to KSh 1.5 million.
Why Okiya Omtatah hasn’t bought luxury cars
In an earlier interview with Spice FM, Omtatah said he hasn’t changed his lifestyle despite his new status.
