Farmers in Bondo sub-county counting losses as River Yala break its banks

Horticultural farmers in North Sakwa location within Bondo sub-county are counting loses after their crops were submerged in the waters following an overflow of River Yala.

River Yala broke its banks due to a heavy downpour in the area on Friday night leaving several acres of vegetable farms marooned and the farmers led by Edna Okinyo say that they have incurred losses to a tune of hundreds of thousands of shillings.

She lamented that all her horticultural crops including kales and tomatoes among others have all been submerged in the waters.

On his part, Stephen Okwero Adur stated that all their agricultural demonstration farms which had a new variety of beans and bananas have been destroyed.

He added that all their irrigation equipment and infrastructure including pipes and the power generator have all been damaged.

Sentiments which have been echoed by Gilbert Oluoch of Environmental Farmers’ Sacco, who said that his group has incurred losses to a tune of over Ksh 500,000.

They have therefore appealed to the government both at the national and county level to come to their aid so that they may be able to counter the loses since most of their investments were from loans that expected to repay after harvesting their produce.
