Justin Muturi is the current Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya since 2022. He is a seasoned Kenyan politician who had even served as the speaker of the national assembly.

Justin Muturi Date of Birth, Full Name and Early Life

Muturi’s full name is Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi and he was born on 28th April of 1956 making him be 67 years as of the year 2024. Muturi was born in Kanyuambora in Mbeere North in Meru County.

Justin Muturi Education Background 

Muturi attended a local primary school and later joined Kangaru Boys High school. He passed his KCSE exams well and joined University of Nairobi in 1978 to pursue a Law Degree and graduated in 1981. He would later join the Kenya School of Law for the Post Graduate Diploma in Law. Muturi was admitted to the bar as an advocate of High Court of Kenya in 1982.

Justin Muturi Career and Political Journey 

Muturi’s life is just about politics as he has spent a lot of his years as a politician and he has few records of career outside politics. However, he did serve as an employee of the Judicial Service Commission where he was a Principal Magistrate between 1982 and 1997. During this time, he served as the chairman of the Magistrates Association and Judges. He was a member of various organizations such as;

  • Africa Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption
  • Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption
  • Parliamentary Network on the World Bank.

His first entrance into politics was in 1999 by election after the death of Silas Ita who was an MP for Siakago Constituency. Muturi contested to replace him and was lucky to be elected under the Kanu ticket. He would be re-elected in 2002 under Kanu still and he served as Chief Whip for the Opposition.

In 2007, he again vied for reelection but was defeated by Lenny Kivuti. In 2013, Muturi tried his luck for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat on The National Alliance, but lost to Muriuki Njagagua who was running on APK party.

After losing the 2013 election, he was nominated by TNA for the position of the National Assembly Speaker and he won becoming the seventh Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. He is the first speaker to serve following the reestablishment of a bicameral Parliament by the 2010 Constitution.

Prior to the 2022 general elections, Muturi geared up towards vying as a president but he was lured into a deal with the Kenya Kwanza camp which saw him become the Attorney General.

During his time in parliament, Muturi served in various committees and positions making him a very experienced lawmaker in Kenya.
