Livestock Farmers and traders in Mbeere North decry challenges that affect the sectors growth

Livestock farmers and traders at the famous Ishiara Market in Mbeere North, Embu County have decried a myriad of challenges that affect the sector’s growth hence affecting their income generation.

They observed that livestock trade and industry despite driving a significant segment of the local economy in Mbeere North, they work under deplorable conditions in the only herbatour in the market which lacks power, requisite cranes and enough water.

They further stated that the area has a potential to raise more revenue if wel managed by the County Government.

The market mostly serves the people of Evurore, Muminji wards in Mbeere North and neighboring areas of Tharaka Nithi County who depend on livestock farming and trade to make a living and to support their household income.

The farmers were speaking during a tour by entrepreneurship experts from Berlin and Africa to understand their experiences and concerns in their farming and trading activities with an aim of developing solutions that will move their businesses to the next level.

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku who hosted the entrepreneurship experts, explained that the experts are seeking to establish areas of partnership to empower the livestock stakeholders to maximize their production for better earnings and economic growth.

Ruku urged the County government to follow up with the Ministry of livestock and Kenyatta Meat Commission on earlier proposals to improve the Ishiara Livestock industry that has a name for tasty goat meat.
