Wildlife conservation Secretary Dr. John Chumo, leads Mwingi locals in planting 14,000 trees

Dr. John Chumo, Wildlife Conservation Secretary in the state ministry of Tourism and wildlife has led locals of Mumoni ward in Mwingi North in a tree planting exercise at Mumoni hills in line with President Ruto’s directive to increase the forest cover by 2032.
Speaking after the exercise, Chumo said climate change has also led to human wildlife conflict this forcing the ministry to compensate millions of money to the affected Kenyans.

He emphasized on the need to conserve the environment and avert the effects of climate.

His sentiments were echoed by Kitui Deputy Governor, Wambua Kanani who added that the county government is on the frontline in ensuring it fights desertification.

Kitui County Commissioner, Kipchumba Ruto said the adverse effects of climate change particularly prolonged drought and floods led to loss of lives emphasizing on the need to plant and grow trees especially during this rainy season.

The area MCA, Tutus Kasinga pleaded with the government to deploy more forest officers to ensure the forest that receives the highest amount of rainfall in Kitui is safeguarded.
